Hospitals In The Malaga Area Provide Excellent Service

What about hospitals in the Malaga area?

First port of call for any medical attention is your local Healthcare Centre (Ambulatorio) where there is generally a 24-hour emergency department available should that be necessary.

But, for non-emergency treatment simply go along and make an appointment to see your G.P. Until recently this entailed a fair wait ... queueing for sometimes up to an hour or even two to make the appointment. But now thankfully a new telephone service has been introduced and by calling 902 505 060 you can now schedule a time with an english speaking telephonist. Remember to have your health card at hand as you´ll be asked for your social security number.

If your doctor decides there is a need for further specialist attention or tests (and you are resident in one of Málaga´s coastal towns) then you’ll usually be sent to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella.

Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella

This is a modern facility with a very good reputation. I know personally a number of people who have passed through its doors and all of them vouch for the quality of efficient and professional care they received.

It has been in existence now for around twelve years and as you would expect with such a high percentage of foreign residents living here on the coast the Costa del Sol benefits from a devoted group of voluntary interpreters, who have actually been recognised by the Junta de Andalucía for the quality of service they provide.

Malaga, being the capital of the province, is also well supplied with some excellent social security hospitals. You may hear about the Clínico Universitario based by the University Campus on the Campillos Road … and the Carlos Haya Hospital which is situated in various complexes throughout the Malaga area. Please note that children are attended at the Materno Infantil which belongs to the Carlos Haya Group.

If you and your family have private health insurance then it is worth noting that a new private hospital ... the Xanit Hospital has opened in 2007 and is situated in the municipality of Benalmadena.

It offers the most advanced technology in health care covering all aspects including the Heart Institute, the Neuroscience Institute and the Institute of Oncology. Not to mention the Esthetic and Plastic Surgery Department.

The Xanit also offers integral health care for children giving 24 hour attention. It has a multi-lingual patient care system so provides easy treatment for non-Spanish speakers

There are 45 out-patient surgeries and 111 private rooms for in-patient care (with satellite digital T.V., Internet, a private bathroom and a bed for a companion.)

A new concept here is the focus on preventative medicine and the hospital offers day-long medical check-ups from 1.200 €

There are also three Xanit Clinics in the area providing 24 hour medical and ambulance service:

Fuengirola (Avda. Ramón y Cajal – Edificio Beroe - 952477310)

Torremolinos (Avda. Carlota Alessandri, 41 - 952372451)

Nerja (C/Antonio Millón – Edificio Peñaflor – 952526187)

The Insurance Companies the Xanit works with are as follows:

Allianz. Asisa. Caser Salud. Cigna. Groupama/Meditec.

Grupo Cisne. IHC Spain. Int. Health Insurance (Denmark)

Mapfre. Medifiatc. Previsión Medica. Sersanet.

Vitalicio/La Estrella. Winterthur.

For further information telephone: 952367190. The web-site (as yet only available in Spanish) is www.xanit.net

So, to round up, please be assured when you’re living in the Malaga area that you certainly will not have to compromise on healthcare. The health service here is good, improves all the time and compares well to any other European country.
