Most new residents hire an international removal company who are fully aware of Spanish regulations on the importation of personal and household effects into Spain. There are generally no restrictions and no taxes to be paid. Importing pets, pedigree dogs or beloved old moggies is also fairly easy. The pets need to be accompanied by their owners and hold a certificate of health and origin. This certificate needs to be organized in advance but obtained just prior to departure as currently a certificate is valid for ten days only.
All this can be arranged by the Animal Health Divisional Office in the U.K. and you can find out where your nearest office is by calling tel. 08459 335577. Once here and living in Spain there are so many veterinary clinics that you - and your dog - will be spoiled for choice! As far as importation of British cars into Spain … well, I know it’s none of my business but if I were you … I wouldn’t. Driving a car here in Malaga is hairy enough without having to travel around in a vehicle with the driving wheel on the wrong side!
But, if you insist … then this is the script. Importation of a British car is allowed and non-residents can use their imported car for up to six months in any one year.
If the non-resident becomes a resident then the car must be registered in Spain… must obtain Spanish plates… and is liable to a 12% tax (based on the ready-reckoned value of the vehicle) You’ll also need to take the car along for a roadworthiness test to the local ITV (MOT) centre and it may be that some adjustments to the vehicle will be needed. But, really, a better idea would be to hire for the first couple of weeks and look around for that new Spanish car. You can even book online with Holiday Autos
