Malaga Shopping
Malaga is simply a shoppers paradise. There are innumerable commercial
centres, stores and shopping districts throughout the Capital. But rather
than write a long list of what’s available we’ve decided to concentrate on
a varied and interesting selection all within the very heart of the city.
To kick off we have the largest El Corte Inglés store in the province
situated right in the centre of town on Avenida Andalucia. This is really
two stores in one … the main store being a spacious six floors of fashion and accessories.
The second
store which is mostly furniture and household goods is reached through a
subterranean walkway.
As always El Corte Inglés has some of the best there is on offer of the
Spanish market and if you have the Corte Ingles Credit Card you’ll also
have two months interest free before having to pay !! This is good.
One thing to remember if you’re thinking of buying in several departments
is to ask for the Carta de Compra (Buyers Card) with your first purchase.
This allows you the convenience of hands-free shopping and leaving the
´paying and picking up` to the end.
A stones throw away, just behind El Corte Inglés is the Malaga Plaza, a
relatively small and rather elegant shopping centre. The Plaza offers
something of a haven in the hustle and bustle of the city. There is quite a
peaceful feel to the place … open and light … and with live music in the
form of a pianist playing gently in the background.
Although not a huge area … there is around fifty units in all … you’ll find
an unusual blend of shops available.
Also just minutes away from El Corte Inglés and in total contrast is the
Larios Centre (on Avenida de la Aurora) This place is buzzing. Almost
100,000 square metres with 125 shops, ten cinemas and around a dozen bars
and restaurants. Opening hours are the usual 10 a.m. ´til 10 p.m. and, of
course, there´s easy parking.
Next up is one that I’ve mentioned once or twice before and that is Calle
Larios (Larios Street) on the edge of the old quarter of Malaga. This
has got to be one of the best pedestrian shopping streets around. Filled with
interesting boutiques and shoe stores.
It’s worth a visit just to see this wide
promenade of elegant buildings recently restored to their 18th Century
splendour.
And, of course, at the top of Larios Street you can carry on into
the Historic District and test out some of the charming old Tapa Bars !
Last on the list is the Malaga Train Station (?) Yes, that’s right. The old station re-named Estación María Zambrano has
been spectacularly re-vamped and is currently looking very impressive. The new
facilities consists of the 220 room Barcelo Hotel, 13 cinemas, a bowling
alley and a superb shopping mall.
So no worries about missing trains in the future when you can now easily browse away a couple of hours in this delightful shopping complex!
