Eva Pern Comes to the Costa del Sol

Move over Madonna out of the way, Antonio . Evita has hit
Fuengirola with our most talented cast yet!

The Salon Varieties English Theatre has done it again ! The Evita
show had such a good press that it sold out even before the
first night curtain went up and the cast certainly delivered with a
superb evenings entertainment ! There were standing ovations,
repeated curtain calls the lot !

We are so privileged here in this coastal town in southern Spain to
enjoy a quality English theatre that time after time produces dramas,
farces, musicals and even Xmas pantomimes that entertain us from
October to May each year.

The Salon Varietes opened its doors in June of 1985 with the then
famous Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. Over the years the
theatre has been a social and cultural centre for foreign residents to
enjoy a superb standard of live theatre performed by some extremely
talented people supported by ex-professionals who in their time have
appeared in the West End (Londons theatre-land) The theatre has
been remodelled a number of times, has recently undergone an extensive
re-vamp and is now looking rather lovely.

The next production, from the 24th to the 27th of October is something
totally different the drama A Pack of Lies`, which is based on a
true spy story set in the background of the Cold War of the 1960s and
then in November watch out for the gripping, Agatha Christie tale of
murder and intrigue And Then There Were None`. Eight guests arrive at
a country estate for the week-end only to find that the host is
mysteriously not at home`..

For those who missed out on Evita this time, the show will be repeated for three
nights in November so, call now. Whatever your taste youre bound
to find something to entertain. Dont forget now to support your local
theatre and keep those doors open !

All The Fun Of The Fair

Its that time of year again October (6th -12th) and the fabulous Fuengirola Fair is in full swing! This wonderful annual event dates back over decades and started out as an agricultural show which has evolved into one of the best fairs of Andalusia visited by townsfolk and thousands more from Spain and abroad.

Theres entertainment 24 hours a day the most famous Spanish bullfighters come to show off their skills and the public also get an opportunity to have a go` ( but, as you can imagine, with much smaller young bulls) Even the children get a look in when the clown bullfighters come along to entertain in the comic childrens show.

Horses too have always featured strongly in the fair the highlights of the week being the cavalcade of beautiful horse-drawn carriages through the town and the spectacular dancing horse show which takes place in the bull-ring.

Its music, song and dance for the whole week and this year the Spanish Diva Isabel Pantoja is coming along to perform in the Feria concert hall. Everyone dresses up in their best Andalusian outfits to visit the shows or simply to parade around or ride their perfectly preened horses through town. We have the pleasure of watching professional flamenco exhibitions along with the equally entertaining sudden spontaneous bursts of Sevillana dancing from the local girls

and when everyone is dressed up to the nines, when the horses are so polished you can see your face in them when everyones having the best time this is when, almost every year, the heavens open and we enjoy` the first rains of the season. But miracle of miracles this year we are enjoying balmy, sunny days of 28C and clear star-filled nights. So, come along now and visit ... whilst the goings good.

The Biggest Foreign Language Library on the Costa del Sol

Well, Im finally putting pen to paper and am starting the long promised blog!!!
It will be coming up once a week or so and will be covering a variety of subjects that
I hope will be of interest to new residents and soon-to-be residents of the Costa del Sol.
So . here we go!

Theres one thing that so many ex-pats miss from home` (we must be the only nation
on earth who still talk about the U.K. as home even when weve lived twenty years
abroad!) and that is the local librarybrowsing and picking up the latest Jillie Cooper,
Kathy Kelly or whatever is your fancy. So, for the English bookworms amongst us who
dont yet know we have a treat in store. One of the biggest foreign language
libraries in the province of Malaga is right here in Benalmadena.

Most Costa del Sol libraries have a few shelves of books in English, but here
were talking about 21,000 books and magazines which make up half of all the
books in the Municipal library.

This foreign language library was founded in the summer of 1987 by an interesting
English lady named Betty Watt who is now 91 years old (!) and, who still goes daily
to work at the library. Hows that for an advertisement for retiring to the Costa del
Sol? There are presently about a dozen volunteers who currently happily help her out.

Theres no charge and youll find it at
Camino del Prado, N 6, in Arroyo de la Miel.
Tel. 952 574 151
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday from 10 till 1p.m. and Wednesday afternoon the
library is open from 5 to 7 p.m.

So, no excuses now for not reading you too can join the library just as you would
in the U.K. Come on - check it out!
