Your Rights as a UK Citizen
In this section we cover the Social Security requirements and benefits for British residents (other than pensioners) living in Malaga. There are European Union healthcare agreements in place to cover E.U. nationals transferred temporarily to other member countries. Any British worker whilst still employed by a company in their home country can continue to make S.S. contributions in the U.K.. He or she will be free from contributing to the Spanish system for one year. To take advantage of this agreement you値l need Form E128. If you are employed by a Spanish company then your Spanish employer may take care of registering you with the Social Security. But, if he doesn稚 then you値l need to take yourself off to the S.S. office with the originals (and photocopies) of your: - work contract
- passport
- proof of residence in Spain
- marriage/birth certificates of any dependant relatives who you値l want registered for healthcare cover.
You should immediately receive a S.S. Number and be assigned to a healthcare centre (ambulatorio) in your area where you can register with a G.P. (medico de cabecera). A month or more later you値l get your plastic health card through the post.
For the entrepreneurs setting up in business here on the Malaga coast you池e best bet (even if you consider your Spanish to be really good) is to employ a
Gestor or Lawyer
to do the paperwork for you. They will speed up all the necessary red tape while leaving you free to concentrate on business.
U.K. students who come to Spain to study or whose work is specifically related to a recognised British study course will be entitled to healthcare cover for up to two years. The student will be exempt from paying Spanish S.S. contributions.
Any dependants accompanying them to Spain will also have the same healthcare cover. To benefit from this exemption you値l need to apply to the National Insurance Contributions office in Newcastle and obtain Form E128.
