A Spanish Private School
For Your Child?

A Spanish private school is an option well worth considering. When looking at private schools in the Malaga area the majority of English residents associate mainly with English curriculum schools.

But ... if you see yourself and your family living in Spain permanently then why not think about enrolling your children in a Spanish private school? Think about it… they’ll have the best of both worlds.

As they would in a state school the kids soak up the Spanish language and Spanish culture and in no time at all they’ll become an honorary Andaluz and even start to speak with a local accent… leaving you far behind!

Plus, they’ll have all the benefits of private education:

  • smaller, more personalised classes
  • more extensive extracurricular programmes
  • cultural excursions and of course
  • very active parent-teacher associations.

Another advantage is that the fees, generally are lower than British private schools. In fact, some schools are bargain-basement prices!

The reason being that although all Spanish private schools are privately owned, some owners accept part-payment of the teachers salaries from the Andalucian Government … so, fees, of course are reduced. These schools are called ´Colegios Concertados`.

Some school owners prefer not to accept any government funding and therefore maintain more independence … and consequently, higher fees. As you might imagine competition for available places is considerable and you won’t find a vacancy by leaving it to the last minute.

The school year begins in the first week of September so you’ll need to start looking at schools in about January and be prepared to put down a deposit of around a 1.000€ to secure the place.

If you do decide on a Spanish private school it might be an idea to organise the children’s enrolment before purchasing a property here in Spain.

A little preparation is all that’s needed although compared to England the process is still a lot more leisurely - we have friends in England who actually put their boys names down for a certain school in the UK the day they were born!

Here’s a list of schools you might want to try … and if your Spanish isn’t the greatest then enlist the help of a Spanish speaking friend on the first approach.
