University of the Third Age

University of the Third Age ia a non-profit making asociation for English speaking mature people who enjoy learning for pleasure and personal fulfilment.

It operates from October to May with a wide choice of subjects . e.g.Book circle ,computing ,photography., Spanish, Art, Games, sewing, crafts , talks,walks,travel and day trips

Our Group leaders are volunteers willing to share their interests and/or expertise with other members. Winter visitors can lead or join a short course.University Membership fee 25€ full term Oct – May or 15€ Jan – May. Then sessions are free. Registration : Fridays 11 – 13.30 at the University of the Third Age information desk at the Ark Fellowship Hall,Las Rampas,Fuengirola. Opposite city centre Dunnes Stores.Dates for the main registration days before the October term begins will be advertised nearer the time.

Golden Age of SpainWeekly from 13 January from 15.15 to 16.45, at Lux Mundi, Ref. Lib for a period of 6 weeks. Course ends 24 February.Tel: Kay White - 952 471 197Kay, a great favourite of the U3A, will spend part of her winter reminding us of the years of discovery, wealth and cultural supremacy. This University-Third Age course lasts six weeks and we will examine various aspects of this fascinating period with the help of audio and visual material.

During this period, many important developments took place throughout Europe in all aspects of society - politics, arts, sciences, etc. Group members are encouraged to contribute on any topic within the timeline which may be of interest to others.

Max 10Tel: John Ide - 952 665 088The sub-title for this programme is ‘Things that I don’t really know how to do and am too scared to try at home in case I mess something up’. Participants will have a good working knowledge of the computer they already own and regularly use at home. The workshops will concentrate on practising how to get more out of the computer and implement a few interesting tricks of the trade. Members are also welcome to participate in the Computer Users Club on Thursdays. This University - Third Age course is over a period of 5 weeks and will be repeated to meet the demand.

Spanish Beginners Weekly from 15th October from 11 to 12.30, at Lux Mundi, B7-R1 Max 15Tel: Fereshteh Rampino - 952 479 783 This class is for those with little or no knowledge of the language. You will be studying from Español 2000 to be purchased at Libreria Teseo for around €19. Application and dedication will be required and we cannot accept students likely to absent themselves for a period of more than one week. Learning is fun but commitment and homework will be required. Absentees for more than 2 weeks without notifying the GL, will be deemed to have left.

Patchwork First and third Wednesday of each month from 15th October from 11.00 to 12.30, at Lux Mundi, B7-R2Tel: Lesley Thompson - 951 165 033We will learn new techniques and develop those previously taught. Students will be encouraged to produce a piece of work based on the samples made in class. All sewing is done by hand, but many of the techniques can be transferred to a sewing machine. Class suitable for those with very little experience.

This course will consist of five series of talks on aspects of this lively period. We have lined up a Jazz man, and a talk on Bauhaus Architecture. A film showing the 1924 Le Chien Andalou where Bunuel collaborated with Salvador Dali; a talk on 20’s fashion and much more.

Purchasing cameras, techniques and picture enhancing explained in easily understood terms with practical sessions. Course notes are available for a small charge.

The object is to discuss and research information to make home computing more effective and to more fully justify that expensive box of electronics. We have the use of the digital projector for some meetings and those who have laptops will be able to connect them to the internet via the Lux Mundi wifi router or by hard wire. There are 5 PC’s available in the computer room with internet connection for those without laptops.

On completion, members will have their own unique e-mail address, be competent to send and receive e-mails and be able to use the World Wide Web. Guidance can be given on buying a new computer.There will be a charge of €1 per hour for internet connection.

University of the Third Age - Introduction to Microsoft OfficeWeekly for 7 weeks from 17th October from 16.00 to 17.00, at TBA. Max 6Tel: Roy Futcher - 952 662 511 This course aims to bring Existing Computer Users, who have a PC or laptop, or are familiar with one, the opportunity to use and learn some ‘Tricks of the Trade’ of Microsoft Office. Programmes include Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Window Explorer and Access. Weekly information sheets are provided for a single fee of €1. The course includes some advice on computer security from Virus and Spyware. There will be a charge of €1 per hour for internet connection.

Weekly UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE Information Desk John Ide - Tel: 952 665 088 We will be operating our weekly Information Desk on Fridays between 11.00 and 13.00 at the Ark Christian Fellowship Hall in Las Rampas commencing 10th October. The Information Desk is manned by U3A members who are able to provide information on all aspects of U3A including up-to-date news of current events.They will also be able to sign up any new University members who were unable to register on any of the previous registration dates. You would be advised to first contact the group leader of the particular group you are interested in joining to see if there are vacancies. After paying the membership fee, you will receive a receipt and membership card, which will enable you to enrol on a course of your choice. It is also possible to provisionally enrol at a group, if there are places available, and register at the Information Desk in the following week.
